    Foundations Programs @ AAMC

    Diploma Foundations

Valerie McGrath, DF Supervisor

Most students come to the first year of the Diploma program with an elementary level of English and mathematics. In the first semester students study English, maths, computing, career orientation and learning skills. In the second semester they continue to study English, maths and computing, but they also take courses in business and engineering. Near the end of the year they choose the program (Business, Engineering, or IT) in which they would like to study the following year.

One of the main aims of Diploma Year 1 is to help students make the change from school learners to college learners.Students are encouraged to work independently outside the classroom and are helped by their teachers to learn the skills needed to do this. During the middle of each semester is an Independent Learning Activities Week during which students work on a project in which they further develop and combine the skills they have already developed in their courses. A special feature of Diploma Year 1 is the Outdoor Leadership Program. Students participate in fun and challenging outdoor activities on the college's low ropes course. They also participate in two overnight expeditions during which they cross wadis and mountains, set up camp and cook, track animals and generally learn more about the UAE's natural history. All of these activities help students to develop their self-confidence, teambuilding skills and leadership skills.

    Higher Diploma Foundations

Douglas Henderson, Foundations HD Supervisor

Higher Diploma Foundations is a year long preparatory program designed to provide a bridging program to assist students in the transition from secondary school level to college level learning, and to prepare students for their career studies. During this first year at the college, students take courses in English, Math, Arabic, Computing, Research Skills and Projects and Personal Development. These courses equip students with the required knowledge and skills that are essential for their future career studies. Students then choose a program in Business, Information Technology or Engineering.

English in the Foundations year focuses on the four main language skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening – and encourages students to develop greater accuracy and fluency. Math covers the main numeracy areas that the program specialization requires. Computing teaches keyboarding, file management, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet searching. Research Skills and Projects involve staff from the library. Students learn how to locate knowledge found in books and on the Internet. The projects provide integrated learning opportunities where concepts from the core courses are recycled and practised. Finally, Personal Development introduces students to skills of time management, organization We want students who join the Higher Diploma Foundations program to be challenged intellectually and, above all, to be stimulated and have fun. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like further information on the Higher Diploma Foundations program.
