Library Week 2010!
To kick off the One Book, One HCT reading program of the HCT, Libary Week at AAMC this year featured another well-known traveller who went to many cities and countries all over the world, Ibn Battuta. The Library held a week-long Information Quest about the man and the places he has visited. In support of the recently concluded Vocabulary Conference hosted by the Centre of Excellence for English, the Library also ran a Get Caught with Words competition. A place for Independent Learning
AAMC’s Library & Learning Services Centre (L&LS) is part of the network of Library and Learning Centres across the HCT system. In common with these Centres, our mission is to develop independent and lifelong learners by:
- acquiring, creating, and providing effective access to information and learning resources;
- assisting students to attain the skills required to succeed in a knowledge-based society;
- collaborating with faculty to create and deliver innovative learning opportunities;
- promoting and using the most appropriate technologies available to provide information and learning services.
Access to Information
More than 15,000 books, periodicals and videos are available on campus. Electronic access is also available anytime, anywhere to more than 5000 online periodicals and e-books. Students and staff have access to a further 200,000 items across the HCT library system via the online catalogue; and also to the extensive resources of the libraries at UAE & Zayed Universities, using the .
The Independent Learning Centre in L&LS combines information resources in all formats with learning resources to create an environment where students and staff can move seamlessly between research, project work and independent learning. Its aim is to assist students in developing life-long, transferable learning skills such as critical thinking and creative problem solving.
Instruction & Guidance
The Library & Learning Services staff are available to assist students and staff to become confident learners and skilled information seekers. Our instructional programs are coordinated from the Independent Learning Centre, offering interactive software for self-paced study of English language skills, Maths, Business and Technology.
It is the role of L&LS to be integral to the formal instruction of all students and staff in information literacy. Library staff are involved in classroom delivery at all levels and in providing support for specialist faculty in the delivery of content across the curriculum.
The Library and Learning Services team welcome students and staff to make full use of these collections and to take advantage of the many services available, including: orientation and other Professional Development sessions; research skills instruction; and an inter-college loan service.
