Green Week 2011 Promotes Environmental Awareness @ AAMC
Higher Colleges of Technology in Al Ain hosted its third annual Green Week event from April 19th to 21st, 2011. This year’s event was made possible by the generous contributions from Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, Bee’Ah: The Sharjah Environment Co., Tandeef and ACE Hardware.
Organized by the Al Ain Colleges Student Environment Group (AACEG), the event aimed to raise awareness of the world’s more pressing environmental issues. It also aimed to raise awareness of the social and economic issues that arise from environmental degradation. The importance of these issues and how students can make changes to benefit themselves, their community and the global community were explained and actively encouraged.
Each day of Green Week was represented by a theme including Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, and Rejuvenate. The AACEG awarded prizes to staff and students who “got caught” taking part in such sustainable activities as recycling, carpooling, reusing water bottles, and refusing plastic bags. On the final day staff, faculty, and students were invited to help the AACEG “rejuvenate” the college by planting an indigenous Ghaf tree as a symbol of the Al Ain Colleges’ commitment to sustainable development.
The AACEG also hosted an exhibition inviting some of the UAE's most well known champions of the environment. Exhibitors included Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, ACE Hardware, the Emirates Environmental Group, the Center of Waste Management at Abu Dhabi, MBM Dallah, the Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort, the Red Crescent and Wetless Car Cleaning and Polishing.
Students also took part in the media competition and presentation competition. Students applied their media skills and talents to create films, posters, photographs, and glogs to promote “Earth Day Every Day ". First prize in the media competition went to Ibrahim Al Ameri, a Level 4 foundations student, for “Are We Fair to the Environment?” - a powerful short film about the negative impact humans have on the planet. First prize in the presentation competition went to Essam Rumaili, an eBusiness Management student whose presentation called “Green Thinking” emphasized the need to adopt the many green technologies that already exist.
The highlight of the event was a talk given by Ms. Fowzeya Ibrahim Al Mahmoud, Manager of the Environment Education Department at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi. Called “Green quilt or Green Pride”, Ms. Fowzeya inspired Al Ain College students to rethink the role they play in making a difference to the environment.12 Students From Al Ain Colleges Return From a Humanitarian Mission in Zambia
From March 23rd to April 4th, the Higher Colleges of Technology, Al Ain Colleges partnered with Oasis Hospital and CURE International to offer 5 male students and 7 female students from Al Ain Colleges the opportunity to visit Zambia and volunteer at a pediatric hospital specializing in the treatment of children with physical disabilities.
During their humanitarian mission in Lusaka, Zambia, the students provided a valuable help to Beit Cure Hospital by alphabetizing nearly 4000 medical records, inventorying a medical supplies facility, and sorting out a container full of medical products. The work, which was completed by the students made it possible for the hospital staff to make use of the medical products and also made it possible for the medical staff to locate patients’ medical records in a timely manner.
Throughout the trip, students were introduced to different aspects of Zambian and African culture. They interacted with patients and their families and attended social and cultural events.
Students also visited Lusaka National Museum, National Heritage Village, Lusaka National Park, and Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is the largest waterfalls in the world and it is located on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa.
Reflecting on her experience in Zambia, Amal Al Kuwaiti from AAWC said: “The trip was a unique opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life and I will forever cherish that opportunity”. Sultan Al Badi, a student at AAMC said: “The trip was great and taught me to appreciate the things we have in our country and it increased my sense of responsibility”.
Two staff members from AAMC and two from Oasis Hospital accompanied the students. This trip was made possible by generous donation from an anonymous donor from Al Ain, Oasis Hospital, Etihad Private School in Abu Dhabi, and students fundraising efforts.HCT’s Al Ain Colleges host the Fourth Centre of Excellence for English Conference
