College News
Student of the Month
Khaled Mohammed Al Saedi is a semester two student from the Diploma in Information Technology program and is chosen as December 2009's Student of the Month.
The College went on a semester break and it is only now that we are able to give Khaled his certificate. He is quite happy receiving his reward as shown here with Associate Director Tim Smith, Foundations Program Supervisor Val McGrath and English teacher Mike McPherson.
Entrepreneur Project 2009 at Al Ain Men’s College
During semester one from August to December 2009, students in their final year of Business and IT Higher Diploma programmes at Al Ain Men’s College participated in the Al Ain Men’s College ‘Entrepreneur Project’. This semester-long course involved students writing detailed business plans for a small business start-up with a strong social or environmental benefit. Students came up with a wide range of ideas including e-books for use by schools and colleges, an online auction site to recycle used goods and solar-power-producing roof tiles. Mentors from the local business community were invited to the college to give advice and, ultimately, to assess the students’ work.
Several organisations provided trophies and prizes:
- Injazat Data Systems
- Focus Profiling
- Money Works magazine
- Empost
Other participating organisations included:
- EnTech
- The National Newspaper
- Daman Insurance
- Al Ain Junior School
- Unibeton
The project has now been running for three years and looks set to continue in the future. As one mentor said after the final session on 30th December, “Thanks for giving us the opportunity to participate in this event. I was really impressed with the strategic direction of the students along with their projects and skills”.
AAMC Struggles to Move in the Sand
Dubai Men's College hosted their annual Beach Volleyball and Football tournaments for all male students of the HCT. This year, we fielded teams to both the volleyball and football events. Despite valiant efforts from our students, AAMC didn't fare so well coming up in fourth place in both events where a total of 6 colleges competed against one another. In football, we conquered Fujairah, tied with Sharjah and Madinat Zayed but lost to Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah. In volleyball, we lost to most teams but triumphed over Ras Al Khaimah. Sand indeed is a tricky terrain and it was a struggle for our students to win over more experienced players. However, we did put up a good fight and our volleyball and football team members promised to work harder and try to win the top prize in these events in the coming year. Support our teams and encourage students to join in these teams and be more active in sports. For more details, contact the Sports and Recreation Coordinator.
Al Ain Men’s College students visit the Emirates Cement Factory
On Wednesday 23rd December, 2009, Al Ain Men's College (AAMC) Diploma in Electrical Engineering students visited the Emirates Cement Factory in Al Ain as part of a course requirement for ELEC 3131. The aim of the visit was to recognise the role of electrical machines in industries and to follow one of the important electrical networks, such as the local cement factory. On arrival they were introduced to the electrical network of the factory which involved transformers, feeders, motors, and their protection. Students had a chance to follow the electrical network step-by-step from the primary substation to end loads such as motors and control panels. They also had hands-on experience of the industrial process itself by making the final cement product. The success of this visit demonstrates AAMC's commitment to linking classroom activity with industry requirements. The students were so enthused they suggested such visits should be conducted frequently.
